I recently accompanied a client — an avid golfer with a taste for adventure — on a 28-day journey from the dramatic cliffs of the Garden Route all the way north to the Limpopo bushveld. The brief was simple: find the best golf courses in the country, weave them into an extraordinary road trip, and make sure that every tee time came with a story worth telling.

What followed was one of the most remarkable golf journeys I have ever witnessed. South Africa does not just offer world-class golf — it offers hippos in the water hazards, elephants on the fairway, and sunsets over the Indian Ocean that make it genuinely difficult to focus on your backswing.

Here are the five courses that stood out above all others.

1. Leopard Creek Country Club — Where the Bush Meets the Fairway

Location: Marloth Park, Mpumalanga (Kruger National Park border)

If you can play only one course in South Africa, make it this one.

Leopard Creek sits on the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park, separated from the wilderness by nothing more than the Crocodile River. The result is a golf experience unlike anything else on earth. Hippos surface in the water hazards. Crocodiles bask on the banks along the 13th hole. Elephants have been known to wander the course at dawn. The scenery is so spectacular that focusing on your game feels almost beside the point.

The course itself is consistently ranked among the top three in Africa and routinely appears on global top-100 lists. Designed by Gary Player and opened in 1996, its 18 holes trace the riverbank with precision and drama in equal measure — narrow fairways, treacherous rough, and greens that reward patience and punish arrogance.

My client played two rounds here, staying at a private bush villa in Marloth Park just outside the Malelane Gate. He described it as “the best two days of golf in my life.” I believed him immediately.

Insider tip: Request an early morning tee time. The wildlife activity along the river is at its peak at sunrise, and the light is extraordinary. Book well in advance — this course is perpetually in demand.

2. Pezula Championship Course — Golf Above the Knysna Lagoon

Location: Knysna, Garden Route, Western Cape

The Garden Route is already one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world. Pezula takes that beauty and places a championship golf course on top of it.

Perched on the clifftops above the famous Knysna Heads and lagoon, Pezula offers views that make seasoned golfers stop mid-swing. Every hole frames a different panorama — dense indigenous forest, turquoise water, dramatic sandstone cliffs — and the layout by Ronald Fream uses the natural terrain brilliantly, routing holes through ravines and along elevated ridges without ever feeling forced.

This is where my client spent three days, combining two rounds of golf with a day trip to the Featherbed Nature Reserve — a private nature conservancy accessible only by ferry, where oystercatchers and blue duiker share the ancient coastal forest. It is the perfect pairing: world-class golf in the morning, unspoiled nature in the afternoon.

Pezula has hosted international tournament play and is rightfully considered one of the top five courses in South Africa. Its sister course, Simola Golf Estate (a Jack Nicklaus signature design a few minutes away), is worth a round on its own — together the two make Knysna a genuine golf destination for two to three days.

Insider tip: Stay in Knysna town or on the lagoon side for the full experience. The Featherbed ferry departs from the Waterfront — book the afternoon nature walk and sunset return for an evening to remember.

3. Gary Player Country Club — Africa’s Major

Location: Sun City, North West Province

Some courses carry weight beyond the game. The Gary Player Country Club at Sun City is one of them.

Home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge — “Africa’s Major” — this is where Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, and Retief Goosen have competed against a backdrop of Bushveld savanna and the surreal fantasy architecture of Sun City’s Palace of the Lost City. It is, unapologetically, a spectacle.

The course itself is demanding and beautifully maintained — Gary Player’s design philosophy rewards strategic play over raw power, with doglegs, bunkers, and undulating greens that keep even scratch golfers honest. The kikuyu rough is notoriously punishing. The par-five 18th, played downhill toward the clubhouse, is one of the most satisfying finishing holes in the country.

My client based himself at The Palace of the Lost City for four nights — a resort so extravagantly designed that it feels like a film set, and that is entirely the point. Between rounds he visited Pilanesberg National Park (a Big Five reserve a fifteen-minute drive away) and spent an afternoon at the Valley of Waves water park with a younger member of the group.

Sun City works on many levels. For the golfer, the Player Course is the main event. For a mixed group or family, the combination of world-class golf, a proper safari, and resort amenities is unbeatable.

Insider tip: Pilanesberg is one of South Africa’s most underrated game reserves — malaria-free, compact, and with excellent Big Five sightings. Pair your golf days with early-morning or late-afternoon game drives for a complete experience.

4. Skukuza Golf Course — The Wildest Nine Holes in Africa

Location: Skukuza, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga

This one is not about the course design. It is about where the course is.

The Skukuza Golf Course is nine holes of modest but perfectly respectable parkland golf — and it is located inside the unfenced Kruger National Park. There are no electric fences, no barriers, no nets. Just you, your caddie, and whatever the bush decides to send your way.

A round here might be shared with a herd of impala grazing the rough. A warthog might trot across the third green. My client played a morning round at Skukuza and spent most of it unable to decide whether to focus on his scorecard or his surroundings — eventually, wisely, he chose his surroundings.

This is not a course for single-figure handicappers seeking a competitive challenge. It is a course for golfers who want a story. And it delivers one every time.

We paired Skukuza with two nights at the Kruger Shalati — a remarkable all-inclusive lodge built on a historic railway bridge over the Sand River, where luxury carriages are suspended above the water and game comes to drink below. It is one of the most extraordinary places to sleep in Africa.

Insider tip: Always play with a local caddie — they will watch for wildlife while you focus on your game (someone needs to). Guided game drives from the Skukuza camp complement the golf perfectly, and Kruger Gate Hotel next door offers a spa for recovery after the heat.

5. Humewood Golf Club — South Africa’s Hidden Classic

Location: Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Eastern Cape

Every great golf trip has its hidden gem — the course that surprises you, the one you did not come for but leave talking about. For us, that was Humewood.

Established in 1929 and designed by Colonel S.V. Hotchkin, Humewood is one of the oldest and most respected links courses in Africa. Its dunes, coastal grasses, and sea winds produce a playing experience that feels distinctly Scottish in character — tight lies, unpredictable bounces, and a course that changes personality entirely depending on the direction of the breeze.

Gary Player has called it one of the finest courses in the world, and it is hard to disagree. Yet it remains far less visited than the big-name courses on the Cape or in Kruger, which means tee times are available, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the welcome is warm.

My client played Humewood on a leg between the Garden Route and the KwaZulu-Natal coast, staying at a beachfront AirBnB in Gqeberha and combining the golf with a morning visit to Addo Elephant National Park — home to the world’s highest density of elephants, and one of the most rewarding safari experiences in the Eastern Cape.

Planning Your South Africa Golf Journey

The five courses above span the length of the country — from the Western Cape up through the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and North West Province. A comprehensive golf tour that includes all of them requires a minimum of two weeks, and three weeks allows you to pace it properly, breathe it in, and do justice to everything the country offers between the tee boxes.

The route my client took — a self-drive from Knysna to Gqeberha to Durban to St. Lucia to Kruger to Sun City — is one I would not hesitate to recommend to any serious golfer. It combines world-class fairways with Big Five safari, coastal wilderness, township culture, and some of the most dramatic accommodation in the world.

South Africa does not just deserve a place on your golf bucket list. It deserves to top it.
